Kudumbashree Yojana Kerala 2023, Poverty Eradication and Women Empowerment Mission

The Kudumbashree Program is a poverty alleviation and women empowerment program implemented by the state of Kerala in South India. The program was launched in 1997 following the recommendations of a three-member task force appointed by the state government. The program has a three-tier structure for women’s community networks.

What is Kudumbashree Yojana?

Kudumbashree has a three-tiered structure for women’s community networks. At the grassroots level, there are neighborhood groups consisting of 20-45 women from poor households who come together to solve their common problems. These neighborhood groups come together to form Area Development Societies at ward level. Ward-level area development societies form community development societies at panchayat (local self-government) level. Community Development Societies act as apex bodies and implement development activities in Panchayats.

Objectives of Kudumbashree Yojana

Kutumbhree’s objectives are to eradicate total poverty in the state and empower women by providing them with a platform to participate in micro-enterprise activities. The program aims to create a society where women have equal access to resources, opportunities and decision-making processes.

• Providing employment opportunities to women through skill development and entrepreneurship training.
• To promote micro enterprises by providing seed capital and credit facilities to women entrepreneurs.
• To empower women by giving them access to education, health and social welfare services.
• To enhance the social status of women by enabling their participation in decision-making processes at the local level.
• Promoting social development by strengthening community-based institutions and building social capital.

Achievements of Kudumbashree Yojana

Kutumbhree has been successful in solving the problem of poverty in Kerala. According to a study conducted by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the poverty rate among Kudumbashree members has reduced from 34.44% in 2011-12 to 9.47% in 2017-18. The program has also been successful in empowering women by providing them with a platform to participate in micro-enterprise activities. According to official statistics, there are more than 45,000 Kudumbashree micro-enterprises in Kerala, employing more than 4 lakh women.
